One year experience with the Zentyal and Kubuntu implementation into the micro-environment

One of the things we offer is a complete switch to open-source software for small businesses, non-profit making companies and the like. we have out own experience with that. It does not include only positives but in many cases it has sense. We have tried one of the most difficult setting, meaning a family and small business in one (3 notebooks and 3 PCs). It was not important whether it is technically possible to improve from almost collapsing situation into a level, which can even a small company be proud of. The goal was to find whether the expense for purchase and maintenance can be acceptable for the user and what kind of problems the users will face during the change and daily work and whether they can deal with them. Simply, the expense must be lower then all the benefits you get. For the test case, we have even used intentionally only old renewed, it means very cheap, hardware. And the result is? It was a GOOD choice. It is really not all self-saving solution but for many cases we can truly recommend it.


6 months experience in a real life - Zentyal 4.0

We have evaluated our experience with running multiple server installation Zentyal 4.0 in different environments and with different types of users. If I summed up the result in one sentence, then i would say something like this: If you use the maximum functionality (PCs with Windows as well as with Linux managed in one domain, shared calendars and contacts, recurring events with exceptions, meetings, synchronization with the mobile phone, integration with Thunderbird and Outlook, ...), problems are there, but not critical. So we have re-opened the question of whether Zentyal is the best choice, and again came into the conclusion that it really is.


We have launched our own surveillance and monitoring of the servers for which we do the support

Because even us did not keep away problems, and because it is always better to identify problem before it is detected by the client, we have decided to launch our own surveillance and monitoring system. We have tested Nagios for a month or so. Then we have tested Zabbix. And finally we use Zabbix. It has higher hw requirements, but number of templates, configuration via web, the way of result presentation, integrated management of HW inventory, and last but least the user profile management, have proved our choice.


Experience with upgrading Alfresco and Zentyal

We have tested several times Alfresco (4.2 to 5.0) and Zentyal (3.2 to 4.0) upgrades. Alfresco upgrade went through without any problems. For sure, there were needed some setting changes and the already announced new Czech translation but nothing serious. In case of Zentyal, it was not so simple. There was a change of one very important component – groupware Zarafa replaced by Sogo. It means that it was in fact a new installation including data migration / conversion. Despite the above, result was again “successfully finished”.


New Alfresco version 5.0. Updated translation into Czech

Because the new version did not mean just a minor changes in the text, we made use of the situation and did a complete revision of the translation of over 10,000 segments.


Completed "cookbook", a summary of the processes and activities for the projects 'Generational Change'

We have completed a pilot internal cookbook, meaning a sort of summary of all the activities, operations, reports, measuring indicators, methodologies and models for complete use for projects such as the "Generational change in the company". The client can choose either a full list or create a custom order. Of course with our proviso in case that the selection cannot guarantee for the overall result, the effective implementation and success.


Launched the pilot operation of the server

Web is a necessity today. It is a must for almost everybody. But at the same time, in many cases the information placed on web might have even a legal consequences. That is why we have included the site administration in a such simple way, that every user can publish information or document but at the same time, each and every publication requires approval. It is also in all details recorded who, what and when has done. We simply want to show that the web can be managed without an web-administrator and that is is possible to prove and record what has been done, when it has been done, by whom and what was exactly in the document. And all that at forensic level acceptable for court. We are not talking about a solution for big corporations. We are talking about a solution for small companies, municipalities, non profit-making organization etc. As well as, we are not talking about a solution tied to cloud. We are talking about a solution you can install on your server without any loss of data, functionality or continuity...
